The goal of retrofitting is to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs, ideally while increasing lumen output. Traditional incandescent lamps only have a lamp life of about 1,000 hours. This lamp is considered to be an energy hog and also requires frequent maintenance to replace burned out bulbs. More modern lamps can have a lamp life as long as 80,000 hours, while consuming a fraction of the electricity.

If you’ve considered updating your existing fixtures, contact McFadden. Our experts can help you decide if it would be more cost effective to retrofit your existing fixture or buy new. Browse the below retrofit options for different types of energy efficient lamps and how we at McFadden incorporate them into our luminaires.

Fluorescent

Fluorescent technology continues to increase in both its availability and versatility. Almost all fixtures old and new can be outfitted with a variation of fluorescent lamping packages. Expect to see between 10,000 – 20,000 hours of lamp life and up to a 75% reduction in energy consumption.

Metal Halide

The main benefit of metal halide systems is the intense light they provide. A single 400W metal halide lamp can provide twice the light output as fluorescent lamps. They also provide roughly 20,000 hours of lamp life, which reduces maintenance costs. These lamps are often used in conjunction with fluorescent lamps when light output cannot be obtained with fluorescent lamps alone.

LED

LED (Light Emitting Diode) is the latest in energy efficient lamp technology. The main benefits of LED are extended lamp life reduced energy consumption. Some of the newest LED’s are rated over 50,000 hours and energy consumption often 1/30 of a traditional incandescent bulbs. These figures often make LED look very enticing but there are some drawbacks. The technology is still new and can get expensive. Often times the lumen output is lower than fluorescent, which increases the number of fixtures required to obtain the same light levels. Since the costs of LED is also the highest this often puts jobs over budget. For those willing to look at the long-term savings over initial costs, LED is a great option.
